Shinola for the New Year
The founder of Shinola, Tom Kartsotis, brings in outside partners to train his U.S. workers in complex manufacturing skills that were long ago offshored. "The competition came here and took our manufacturing overseas," Kartsotis says. "Fifty years later, I'm trying to get it back and use their experts to build our factories."
The City of Detroit and her people are the initial beneficiaries of his vision. The brand features classic Detroit and Michigan touchstones, like the Argonaut building - the former site of General Motors' famed research lab, where the first automatic transmission and heart-lung machine were created.
All their products are meticulously crafted. A great deal of pride goes into everything they create. Every time someone purchases a Shinola watch, they can feel they're doing their part in Detroit's fight for survival.
